What value does Australia place on its schools?

This paper is based on an invited address, presented at the Principals’ Dinner hosted by Emmanuel College at the University of Queensland in May, 2017. Professor Caldwell draws on his recent research findings to show how, when comparisons are made against important benchmarks, top-performing countries tend to place a higher value on their schools than does Australia. He asks how we have got to this point and what should be done about it. He concludes that much can be done at the policy, school and community levels to improve the situation, but warns that this will demand commitment and effort on an unprecedented scale, and a profound change in culture, if Australia is to become the great nation we want it to be.
