INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

Building partnerships, meeting learning needs and enhancing opportunities for all

 

There is a strong desire within schools and among education teachers and leaders to improve learning outcomes of indigenous students and improve those students’ opportunities.

 

At the same time, within the Australian Curriculum, schools and teachers are urged to take into account indigenous perspectives across all learning discipline areas as they design curriculum for all students, indigenous and non-indigenous.

 

Are those learning outcomes of indigenous students improving and what are the necessary pre-requisites to ensure the best chances of success in that regard? What models are working around Australia and locally? How can we in schools build better partnerships of understanding of indigenous culture, histories and knowledge?

 

And how can we build that indigenous culture, histories and knowledge into curriculum for all Australians?

 

Phillip and Sean developed a primary school in partnership, Darkinjung Barker, built on respect and great desire to provide great opportunities for indigenous students in that community and greater understanding. They will explain the key elements of that successful partnership.

 

We will also hear in a panel of local Victorian school success stories in indigenous education.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Phillip Heath AM

Philip is Head of Barker College in Sydney, having previously been Principal of Radford College in Canberra and Headmaster of St Andrew’s Cathedral School, also in Sydney. He has been instrumental in establishing the Darkinjung Barker School and was previously involved, while at Str Andrew’s in establishing the Gawura Campus in Redfern for Aboriginal children. He described the establishment of these schools as “a shared vision of creating a two-way partnership where we can learn from one another in an educational model that is unique in Australia”. Phillip served as National Chair of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia and also served on the NSW Board of Studies. For his service to education and to creating greater opportunities for Indigenous students, Phillip was awarded a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in 2018.

 

Sean Gordon

Sean, a Wangkumarra man, is Managing Director of the Gidgee Group, an Indigenous owned and managed company that specializes in the establishment of partnerships that advocate for improved outcomes for Indigenous peoples and communities. The company provides business and career advice, mentoring and counselling for Indigenous businesses and people, particularly in the Central Coast region of NSW. Previously, Sean was CEO of the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council and, in that role, worked closely with Phillip Heath in the establishment of the Darkinjung Barker School for Kindergarten to Year 6 Indigenous students from the Darkinjung community. Sean was also the inaugural Chair of the Empowered Communities, Empowered People Leadership group, facilitating sustainable structural reform through strategic partnerships between indigenous leaders, governments and industry.
